Frequently Asked Questions

  • I will NEVER EVER knowingly use AI. Not to plot, not to write, and I will not hire artists that use AI or I suspect use AI. That being said, technology is growing rapidly, so if you find something that I’ve used or shared that you suspect is AI, please kindly email me at: katie@katievanbrunt.com

  • Congrats! (haha) Please email me at katie@katievanbrunt.com (Subject: I LOVE YOU BUT I FOUND A TYPO). If you have a screenshot of the specific problem, that’s helpful too!

  • Usually, yes! Please tag me in 4- or 5-star reviews that are POSITIVE only. For the sake of my mental health, please do not tag me in reviews that say something like, “I loved this book BUT/EXCEPT…” (I call it the “4-star jump scare).

  • Yes! I am open to IG Lives, Podcasts, & Interviews, etc. Please email me: katie@katievanbrunt.com

  • Coffee in the morning, tea in the evening.

  • What a terrible question… Kidding! (kinda…) I’m more of a “plantser.” I always start with a scene that excites me the most. I have to write in order to know my characters, so I’ll write a fun scene with lots of dialogue, then I’ll go back and nail down the character’s personalities/motivations, and plot the story. After my first draft, I do a “reverse outline,” where I summarize each chapter and make sure there’s sufficient character and story development.

  • Yes, but it has to be upbeat and instrumental. Lyrics are too distracting for me unless I’m editing.

  • Item descriptionFirst and foremost, write what you want to read! Don’t rush the process. Take your time. When writing your first book you have no idea how long anything will take. Will it take three months or a year to write the first draft? Will it take two weeks or two months to go through alpha/beta feedback and rewrite the draft? In my opinion, the most important thing to invest in is a good editor. Trust me, even if you think you understand Grammar and have an eye for typos, you still need an editor. Your readers will thank you.

  • I love forced proximity, specifically one bed, which is why I wrote it in FOR THE PLOT.

  • Is napping a hobby? Because if so, YES! If I’m not writing, I’m reading, doing “arts and crafts” on Canva (lol), walking to the beach, working out (ugh), and of course spending time with my family because they’re the coolest.
